Hurricane Gustav

This is going to be pretty short and too the point.

There’s been mandatory evacuations called for New Orleans. During a presser earlier in the day, Mayor Nagin and Gov. Jindal made it expressly clear that there will be no government provided shelters for those who choose to stay/can not afford to leave their homes. Or in Nagin’s words, ‘”You’re on your own.”

Many of my remaining family members are already gone. I’ve heard from friends (online and meatspace) whose families have fled already, as Gustav is being called as worse than Katrina. I believe we all know that he levees will not withstand anything over a Cat3 storm, so this is pretty big. Let’s hope that Gustav loses strength before it makes landfall. There’s already been 78 deaths in the Caribbean. I pray there’s no more.

I wish your family well. We had met a wonderful family from NO on my sons travel basketball team. the Mom was a nurse and while busting her butt here they lived in as cheap a housing as they could find and kept funneling money back to rebuild their home. It was done and they moved back 6/27. I wish Tony and everyone well.

My one in-laws are in Houston, south of the city and they too are preparing for evacuation in the event it steers west last minute.

In any event we can all hope for the best.
  • Of my family that is even left in the area after Katrina, one is in MS (Bay St Louis), one in Metarie who is heading out but *pissed* because the closest open motel NOT price gouging is in Tenn, and the third is staying since they are far enough north of the coastline that flooding doesn't get to them (though the wind can still do damage). These are people in their late 70s, early 80s who just cannot believe they have to deal with this again.
